The JKD PUNCH | P3MA SKILLS TRAINING #10

The JKD Punch is a fast, powerful and unconventional punch that you add to your arsenal.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

– Stay relaxed until the very final moment of impact. It is like a whip. Everything is relaxed to maximize speed, and everything tenses to maximize power just before impact.

– Do not pull back your fist before the punch. This telegraphs your movements. Most arts and fighting styles use this pull back motion to get more momentum and build power through the arm’s motion. However, this is not required, because power is generated through the body and twist of the hips, for this punch.

– To generate more power, push off the back foot, twist the hips and allow the energy to flow into the punch. It is all about timing.

The Triangle Theory In Blocking | P3MA SKILLS TRAINING #9

The triangle is the strongest shape. In Wing Chun, this shape is applied into blocking to maximise the strength and stability through structure.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

– Focus on blocking into your opponent’s center line to cut into their attack and force them back. Do not focus on blocking their hands, or you will end up forever blocking.

– Aim to apply weight from your Dan Tien (center), rather than using only the strength of your arms.

– Breathe out from the stomach upon impact

The Leading Punch | P3MA SKILLS TRAINING #8

The Leading Punch is the main punch used in Jeet Kune Do. It is a direct, fast and powerful punch thrown from the front hand. It relies on relaxation and a quick snap for speed. It generates power from the torque of the hips, timing and leverage from the rear foot.

PROGRESSION:

1. Stay loose and snap the punches out, however do not fully extend your elbows to prevent injury. Your punches should feel like whipping a towel.

2. Begin to twist your hips into the punch, adding more of your body weight.

3. Punch from wherever your hands are, do not pull back before the punch. Punch on a diagonal slant and make contact with the largest knuckles.

4. Power comes from proper timing. Perfect timing is when your upper body tenses at the very last second, hips twists and rear foot pushes off. This is the most difficult aspect of the punch.

Punchblock Speed Drill | P3MA SKILLS TRAINING #4

The partnered Punchblock Drill is commonly used in various Chinese martial arts such as Wing Chun and Shaolin Kung Fu to practice hand coordination, reflexes, speed and conditioning. The drill contains 2 blocks followed by a parry and punch. In a real situation, the artist would not use all 3 movements to defend against a punch, he/she would only require one. This is a drill used to effectively build solidity, speed and reflexes in blocking and counter.

IMPORTANT TIPS:

– Apply constant pressure on your partner. Do not let up.

– Practice each block’s solidity and alignment before applying speed. Use the triangle theory in blocking (see next video)

Speed Strike | P3MA SKILLS TRAINING #3

For this week’s P3MA Skill, we have the Speed Strike! The Speed Strike, also known as the Lightning Finger Jab, is a fast strike at a desired target before the opponent can react. In training, it is used to develop quickness and non-telegraphy skills. In self-defence, it is used as an initial strike into the eyes, the lip area under the nose or the throat, before the opponent can even react. The Speed Strike draws influence from Snake Style in Shaolin Kung Fu and the Finger Jab in Jeet Kune Do.

TRAINING:

Drill 1: Stand 1 foot away from your training partner. Aim to tap your partner’s shoulder while they try to block you off.

Drill 2: Stand 1 foot away from your partner and shuffle forward with your stance, while doing the speed strike. This time, you partner can shuffle back to evade as well.

Drill 3: Have your training partner hold up a focus pad. Strike at the pad to condition your fingers.

Drill 4: Have your training partner move the focus pad as you strike, to develop speed and power.

THE KEYS:

– Relaxation is the most important aspect to this skill. It improves speed and non-telegraphy (not showing the intention of your movements)

– The movement is like a whip of a towel. There should be a sudden snap back upon completion.

– Ensure thumb is tucked underneath, and fingers clenched, to strengthen the strike

– Keep elbows in during the strike
